Typeset the book in its own language

Fonts, line breaks, chapter labels, and the language in the ebook follow the manuscript. Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian run right to left. Japanese and Chinese can also run in vertical columns.

One language, the whole book

Choose the language of the manuscript and Folius carries it through the pages and the exported files.

Fonts for the script

Each language is set in typefaces chosen for its letters, and those fonts travel with the print PDF and the ebook.

Line breaks

Lines break the way the language expects, with hyphenation for English and the other European languages.

Chapter labels

Openings use the book’s own words, as in “Chapitre 3”, “第3章”, “제3장”, or “الفصل 3”.

Right to left

Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian read from right to left, and the pages turn that way too.

Length

Japanese and Chinese books are counted in characters. Other languages are counted in words.

Vertical Japanese and Chinese

Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese can be set in vertical columns. Text runs from top to bottom, and the columns follow one another from right to left. Latin words lie on their side, and a two-digit number can sit upright in a single character cell.
